A training workshop was organized in Cairo, Egypt, to strengthen the capacities of heritage site managers and for those developing projects in and around heritage sites to train them in applying Impact Assessments in a World Heritage context. Impact assessments is an important tool to find the best possible solutions to meet both conservation priorities and development needs in the framework of sustainable development.
Introduction.
The three-day workshop brought together over 30 participants concerned with management, conservation and planning at World Heritage properties in Egypt. Organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt and ICOMOS, the workshop took place from 22 to 24 August 2022 in Cairo. The sessions, which were structured around the Guidance and Toolkit for Impact Assessments in a World Heritage Context published by UNESCO, ICCROM, ICOMOS and IUCN in 2022, guided the participants through an introduction to the methodology for preparing Impact Assessment studies, including the principles and processes, which were illustrated by specific case-studies. It provided them with tools to evaluate the risks and threats that new projects may pose to the Outstanding Universal Value of sites, and to elaborate mitigation measures.
