Kyoto to host symposium on 50 years of world cultural heritage next year

Introduction.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the inscription of the "Ancient Kyoto Sites (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Castle)" on the World Heritage List in 2024, Kyoto University will hold a symposium on 50 Years of World Cultural Heritage, "Japan's Contributions to the Past and the Future" on 20 January to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the World Heritage Convention in 2022 and the 30th anniversary of its ratification by Japan. The symposium, organised by the Japan Cultural Heritage International Cooperation Consortium (JCIC), the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and co-organised by the Agency for International Cooperation, the Foundation for International Exchange, and the Japan National Committee for ICOMOS, will review the effectiveness of the World Heritage system in the preservation of Kyoto's cultural heritage, and will also take stock of Japan's experience in participating in international discussions and expanding the global understanding of the preservation of Japan's heritage through its World Heritage properties. It will also discuss the impact of World Heritage on Japan's cultural property system.
